Did you know that the time of day that you exercise effects the results that you achieve? I didn’t. Like most people, I’ve struggled to find a consistent time to exercise. When I was working, there were only a few spots in my schedule where exercise would fit. There wasn’t much choice. As a retired person, the possibilities have completely opened up. I need to choose. I didn’t realize that the time of day I choose, effects the results.

When To Workout?

It’s commonly understood that moving briskly adds to the quality and quantity of our days.* But, I can tailor the effects of my exercise by choosing a specific time of day: the same amount and intensity of exercise, just done at a different time in the day.
Mornings

A morning workout will burn fat, if you’re aiming to lose weight. Moving before noon will set up your body to burn more fat cells than moving at other times of the day.** Morning exercise often works best because you get it over and done with before the rest of the day takes over your attention. Even with a more flexible schedule, remembering to exercise later in the day can be a challenge.
Afternoons

Not a morning person? An afternoon workout has been shown to increase longevity.* It’s a time when our muscles are warmed up from moving around all morning.** In the winter, the afternoon is the warmest part of the day for me to be outside. According to a recent, large study in the UK,*** “The benefits of afternoon exercise for longevity were most pronounced for men and the elderly.”*
Finding What Motivates You

For me, I find that including an afternoon exercise class helps keep me accountable to show up and workout. If I’ve paid for weekly classes and others would notice if I’m not there, I will show up regularly. The dog also motivates me to take regular afternoon walks even in the coldest weather. It’s all about knowing yourself and discovering what works for your schedule.
