Somehow I forgot that public libraries are more than just books. I’ve always had a library card. These days I borrow my books digitally and only occasionally step foot inside a library. I used to recommend the summer library reading programmes to my students. I was aware that they had more to offer others but, I’d forgotten that libraries have more to offer me, than just books.
FREE Classes And Programmes

There are programmes and classes* that I might be interested in and they are one of the last things in the city that are FREE. I recently found a group that shares my passion for yarn crafts. You can learn a new skill or update it. Basic computer training is available, and so are more advanced concepts such as, 3-D printing, and coding. There are courses that improve your health and wellness such as a sustainability project that shows you how to grow more vegetables using the ones that you buy from the store. In Ontario, you can sign up for a pass to the provincial park system.
Opportunities To Make New Friends
You can socialize with folks who share the same interests as you in a craft group or join a regular lecture series at the library. Dr Marisa G Franco notes in her book Platonic, that an effective way to create new friendships is to show up to a class on a regular basis.
…if we show up, regularly, people will come to like us more and more over time. We should never judge a new club or class based on our impressions during the first meeting. Then, everyone is stilted, threatened by unfamiliar faces. Who doesn’t need more friendly people in their lives?

She also mentions the importance of engaging with the people who are there. Introduce yourself and do the small talk. It’s important to be friendly.**
Save Money By Borrowing/Using Equipment

Thinking of taking up a musical instrument but not sure if you want to spend the money only to discover it’s not for you? Borrow an instrument from the library!
Many public libraries have items that you can borrow/use. This is very useful if you only need them for a short time (a 3-D printer, sewing machine, serger, button maker, piano practice rooms). Some libraries even have access to light therapy lamps if you get seasonal affective disorder or might feel like extra light would help you during the dark winter months.
In a world that’s getting more and more expensive, it’s a relief to see an abundance of classes, programmes and equipment available for FREE at the public library.
