A Powerful, Personal Word

Recently, I’ve been talking with two different people about a word of the year. It’s a word that is unique and special to them. It’s a word that they choose independently, or one that others help them to identify. Either way, it is a personal word. The difference is that for one person their word is for the future, and for the other person, it is for the past. Both types are powerful.

A Word For The Past

My new friend chooses a word to describe the year that is almost over. She uses the opportunity to reflect on the challenges and triumphs that she’s felt this year; to acknowledge her growth and to celebrate it. It’s a great way to self-reflect with one compelling word.

This year, I was encouraged to participate too. It’s a powerful feeling to say 2023 was my year of “possibilities” and to be able to explain why that word works for me. (see my recent post, Your Ship Has Not Sailed)

A Word For The Future

My other friend chooses a word for the new year.  It’s a word to guide them, prompt them and encourage them forward.  It’s like a north star to guide them into the future.

I haven’t decided on my new year word yet. I think choosing one will be a lot more do-able than making resolutions, and I’m looking forward to doing it. It’s just one word, one meaningful word.

Would you choose a personal word of the year?

Would it be for the past year, or the future, or both? Comment below with your word(s).
